Brent Franko – Fredrick seeds wins Quill Plains Chev Premier league, Lee Johnson wins Sportsmanship Award

Brent Franko, Murray Sunderland, Steve Moulding and Thomas Sunderland defeated Delores Syrota in the Final of the Quill Plains Chevrolet Premier League. After a low scoring start to the game Delores Syrota, June Campbell, Braeden Floischacker (sparing for Gloria Leach) and Sylvia Broad took a 3-2 lead with a 2-ended in the 6th. Franko followed that up with a big 3 in 7. Syrota failed to get the 2 back she needed to tie the game giving Franko the Championship.

Following the games the league had a banquet proved by B and D Cafe and awards. The player voted on a sportsmanship award and the 2022-23 winner was Lee Johnson.

On route to the final Franko defeated Lyle Leach Quill Plains Chev/Kenzie Seeds and Scott Comfort Kenzie Seeds/RE/MAX, while Syrota defeated Greg Harcourt RJ Sales, and Jenna Pomedli Pomedli Farms. On the B-Side Harcourt was the Champion with wins over Lyle Leach and Scott Comfort. Other games included Comfort beating Pomedli, and Pomedli defeating Leach.

Team Knapp takes SCT event

2022 Scott Comfort – Re/Max Blue Chip Realty Sask Curling Tour Champions: Lead Trent Knapp, 2nd Mike Armstrong, 3rd Brennen Jones, Skip Dustin Kidby and Coach Brian McCusker.

Team Kelly Knapp defeated Team Micheal Carss in the final of the Scott Comfort RE/MAX Blue Chip Realty SCT event in Wadena. In an excellent game, Substitute Skip Dustin Kidby, made a double run back for the win in a well fought battle. After an action packed back and forth game, the teams were tied in the 8th end, and Michael Carrs made an excellent shot with his last leaving team Knapp with a difficult double run back for the win. Pictured left to right is the 2022 champions: lead Trent Knapp, 2nd Mike Armstrong, 3rd Brennen Jones, and Skip Dustin Kidby (missing from picture Coach Brian McCusker).

The Sask Curling Tour – Men’s Division is coming back to Wadena this weekend. Games start Friday at 11:00 with the final going at 4:30 on Sunday. There are plenty of local teams in addition to some of Saskatchewan’s top teams.

Wadena Junior Update

Wadena Juniors are on the U21/U18 SaskCup and U15 Triples tours.

Since the last update our Juniors have been active on the tours and local games/competitions. Look further down to see the entire season wrap up in addition to this past few weeks results here:

The Junior program ran the Curlsask Hit, Tap, Draw competition with hopes of making the Provincial Hit Tap Draw event later this year. Local winners were: Age 6-8, 9-10, 11-12.

Jenna Pomedli and her team won the U21 SaskCup #3 in Swift Current, and lost in the final of the U18 spiel in Prince Albert against all boys teams. Hayley placed 5th in Swift Current with her team Zukewich. Kade Comfort attended the U15 Triples Tour event in Prince Albert with Carter Grindheim (Martinsville) and Nolan Steckler (Warman) and won the B-side.

Wadena Composite School has started practices and Junior high has been hosting Quill Lake, Archerwill, and Rose Valley on Thursdays at 4:00. After Christmas we expect teams from Wynyard, Ituna and Foam Lake to join the others. Some games may be moved to other towns to accommodate travel.

Curlsask Announced a 2023 U12 and U15 Triples Cup in Yorkton in March, in addition, to the 2022 version of the U15 Triples Cup. The later events were added to keep that aged kids

Haylee Bindig (pictured) is on the U21 circuit with team Lydia Zukewich along with Emma Beaulac and Katie Kennedy. Lydia also has ties to Wadena with her father Dave Zukewich. @TeamZukewich placed 3rd in Martinsville, 5th in Humboldt, Bindigs team plans to attend Swift Current SaskCup #3 Nov 25-27, Yorkton U21 Jan 6-8 and U21 Provincials Jan 19-22 .

Jenna Pomedli is skipping her own team on the SK Winter Games/U18/U21 circuit she is joined by Kylie Willms, Kelsey Noyes, Melissa Remeshyl. The team has racked up a bunch of 2nd place finishes including Martensville, Humboldt. Saskatoon Junior Classic, Canada Winter Games Trials and Leduc. @Team J. Pomedli Curling is currently in second place for points with top four teams on the tour getting direct berth to Provincials.

Kade Comfort and Keyanna Bindig have been competing on the U15 Triples tour. Keyanna and Kade lost in the C-Final in Humboldt, while Kade won bronze in Yorkton with Carter Grindheim, and Nolan Steckler. Kade is also attending PA with Nolan and Carter Dec 3rd. Carter, Keyanna and Kade will also be competing at the U15 SaskCup (Provincials).

Wadena Composite School has 1 Junior and 1 Senior team. The Junior high team has started exhibition games, and the Senior High team plans to start more games in January. Dates and location of school competitions are TBD.
